Puerto Adolfo Lopez Mateos is one of Baja California Sur’s best whale watching sites. Grey whales migrate down the coast from the Bering Strait to several different lagoons in Baja to give birth and care for their calves until around mid March. Here you see local fisherman who are waiting to take people out into the lagoon to not only see the whales but hopefully pet one as they are very friendly. This is the only whale species that actively seeks interaction with people and are not shy whatsoever. For reasons unknown, moms push their calves up to the boat so that you can pet them, often times looking straight in their eye and it is one of the most awe-inspiring wildlife encounters anywhere.
